Wow. Nice find! It's the first of the cataloged high-end Austin banjos that I've ever seen.
It's also the only Austin instrument I've ever seen with a "D" serial number that doesn't also say "Made in China." That doesn't shake my faith in their serial number system, though. The AU977 was introduced in 2006, according to the catalogs. The serial number on this one indicates that it was made in December of 2005, right at the cusp of the change in models, and the changeover to Chinese manufacturing. Close enough as makes to nevermind.
