The Echo is a diatonic harmonica, larger than the now-ubiquitous "standard" shape of the Marine Band. The size is necessitated because each note has two reeds, with one very-slightly "detuned" -- the resulting difference (a.k.a. beat frequency) results in the "echo." Each modern Echo has a series of round "vent" holes in each plate, in two blocks of pairs -- at a glance, it's simple to tell how large the particular sub-model is. Originally, the Echo was not only much more crude (with brads holding the scales in place) but the vent holes looked somewhat dangerous, oddly similar to the cutouts in Gillette razor blades.
