Interesting: two versions of the control layout. They simply could not resist pointless tweakage, right to the end!

Lol That’s the same tweak that Austin made in 2006 to their higher-end Tele copies (AU961 and AU 962). IMO, it’s not a pointless tweak. The Tele-style control layout works better with the switch in the middle.

Ah, but you're assuming that the first photo is v.1 - I'm not so confident. And of course I possess a near-mint 962, the first version with the fullsize HB (unbranded pickups but definitely the Big Trev bridge assembly). I figure the control plate is a Wilkinson innovation, but thus far have NEVER found one on the market. I've said that this plate might someday be worth as much as the rest of the guitar!

If the modified control plate were a Wilkinson thing, I think they would have stamped it or otherwise marked it as such. Their application to the AU962 is not consistent, based on what I’ve seen in the wild.
